Bringing Inspiration to Veterans, One Artwork at a Time

The Works of Art

This painting depicts Chief Captain Moroni, a God-fearing man who fought so that his people could keep their rights, privileges, and liberties that they may continue to worship the Lord their God.

As chief commander of the Nephite armies, Moroni was upset to hear about dissensions among his people. Moroni wrote the following on a torn piece of his coat and attached it to a pole: “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children”. He called this his title of liberty. He took this self-made banner and waved it amongst the citizens asking all those that believed in these words to covenant with him to fight to preserve these things.

In reaction to his words, the people put on their armor and ran to him. They ripped off a piece of their garments as a symbolic pledge to not abandon their God and to always fight for their liberties. Those words became their rallying cry.

“Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed…. And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum…that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying…the people which sat in darkness saw great light; and… from that time forth Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:12-17).

This painting depicts the moment Jesus learns of John’s imprisonment and leaves home to start His ministry. He was committed to doing the will of the Father. His mission was to liberate all people from the bondage of sin. He healed the sick, caused the dead to rise, and taught His gospel to all people. He served His people all His life and His final and ultimate act of service was through His death.

This painting is of Elijah the prophet at his darkest hour. This was during the reign of King Ahab who married Jezebel and adopted her belief in Baal and made it Israel’s official religion. She destroyed the prophets of the Lord and sponsored false prophets of Baal. Elijah was the last remaining prophet of the Lord and he challenged the prophets of Baal to call upon their gods to perform a miracle in front of the Israelites. While Elijah was able to call upon the Lord to bring down fire and rain, the hundreds of prophets of false gods could not perform the miracle. The false prophets were gathered and slain. Queen Jezebel was furious and sent word that Elijah would be killed.

Elijah fled into the wilderness and, exhausted, took rest under a juniper tree. Feeling alone and desperate, he didn’t want to live anymore. He asked the Lord to let him die. “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” (1 Kgs 19:4). He fell asleep under the tree and was awakened by an angel who was there to strengthen him both physically and mentally. Although Elijah could not see how he could go on and wanted to give up, the Lord had bigger plans for him. The angel proved to him that he was not alone. The Lord had a better way.

This painting is of 2000 young men preparing for battle accompanied by their faithful fathers. The fathers were once part of a group called the Lamanites. The Lamanites delighted in bloodshed and killed many of their brethren, a group called the Nephites. The Nephites fought to protect their families and their freedoms including the right to worship their God.

One of the Lamanite kings and his people learned of God and repented of their ways. This group of Lamanite warriors made an oath to never take up arms against their brethren again and buried all their weapons of war. Many years later, seeing a great need to help the Nephites in battle they almost broke their oath, but their young sons stepped forward to take their place.

Lead by Captain Helaman, he said that those sons were resolved in their fight to protect their families, their lands, and their cause for liberty. These young men had great faith that their God would deliver them and despite never experiencing battle previously not one of them lost his life.

This painting is of Lehi and Moroni, two captains of the Nephite army. Chief Captain Moroni was a great leader and was respected by his people. Lehi was appointed Chief Captain by Moroni but was still under his command. Both Moroni and Lehi fought in a war against the Lamanites that lasted 13 years. The Lamanites fought to enslave the Nephites while the Nephites fought for a better cause. They fought to protect their families, lands, and freedoms: the freedom to live and worship how they may.

Both men were valiant soldiers, inspiring leaders, and great friends that loved and respected one another. They formed an alliance and brotherhood as they fought together in defense of liberty. This painting shows Chief Captain Moroni embracing Chief Captain Lehi after finding each other still alive after a fierce battle.

When Moroni was 25 years old, he became the leader of the Nephite army. He fought for his people, his country, and his God. He defended their liberties and rights to be free from bondage and worship how they chose. After serving in a war that lasted 13 years, he retired around 38 years old and appointed his son, Moronihah, to take his place as leader of the army and defend his people against their enemies the Lamanites.

This painting depicts Captain Moroni blessing his son and conferring to him the mantle of liberty. A few years later dissension arose and once again the Lamanites came to fight the Nephites. The Lamanites were many but the Nephite army, now lead by Moronihah, were victorious and drove the Lamanites soldiers back to their own lands. Moronihah followed in the footsteps of his father to defend the liberties of his people, his country, and his God. Moroni died peacefully between 43 and 44 years old beloved and respected by his people.

Alma was the chief judge and governor to the people of Nephi. He was also the high priest of the church of God. During this time a wicked man named, Amlici, through manipulation began to have a following that became very powerful. They wanted him to be the king of the Nephites and to destroy the church of God.

The people assembled and voted against Amlici becoming their king. However, Amlici and his followers didn’t accept this outcome and began a war against the Nephites so that he could take away their liberties and they would be forced to serve him. Amlici and his people, after losing one battle, joined the enemies of the Nephites and raged war against them. Their combined army was far more numerous than the Nephite army.

This painting shows the chief judge, Alma, and the dissenter, Amlici, when they came to fight face to face. During the fight, Alma prayed for strength to defeat Amlici. He prayed to God to spare his life and promised to serve Him for the rest of his days. After he said this prayer, he was strengthened and killed Amlici with his sword. Although greatly outnumbered, the Nephites killed many and the rest fled into the wilderness where many more perished. Thus, their liberties remained, and peace restored.

This painting is of Chief Captain Moroni, leader of the Nephite army, writing an epistle to Pahoran, the chief judge and governor over the Nephites residing in the city of Zarahemla.

In this epistle, he rebuked Pahoran for not sending food and aid to reinforce their army. The men are dying by the thousands in battle and are on the brink of starvation but have not received help from the government through sustenance or more soldiers. He described how they are fighting against the Lamanites, their enemies, and that the Lamanites have taken over their lands, kidnapped and murdered women and children and all this because they seek to establish dominion over them.

Moroni admonished Pahoran to repent and send more soldiers and food to help replenish the army or he will come and battle with him in the city of Zarahemla. He ended his epistle stating his intentions were not to seek any praise for his actions, but to fight for His God and to protect his people and their liberties.

Alma and Amulek were missionaries teaching about God’s plan and repentance through Christ to the people living in the land of Ammonihah. These people were wicked, but some believed in their words and wanted to repent of their ways. Others hardened their hearts and wanted to get rid of the people that believed what was being taught. They arrested Alma and Amulek, drove the believing men out of the city and stoned them, and then burned their wives and children in a large fire along with the holy scriptures.

The perpetrators and evil civilians did not allow their citizens the liberty or freedom to worship according to their beliefs. They imprisoned Alma and Amulek and tortured them. Then Alma cried out to Lord asking Him to deliver them from this torture through their faith in Christ. They were then given the strength to break their bindings. When their captors witnessed this, they were afraid and tried to run away. Those that had tortured them were slain as the prison crumbled to the ground and Alma and Amulek walked out free and unscathed.
