Inspiring Works of Art to Show Appreciation for Our Servicemen and Women

About the Gift of Gratitude Foundation

The purpose of The Gift of Gratitude Foundation is to express love and gratitude towards those who serve to protect our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These men and women are our veterans, peace officers, first responders, doctors, nurses, and those who serve selflessly on behalf of their fellowmen. The Gift of Gratitude Foundation honors those men and women with works of art inspired by stories of faith, prayer, virtue, and courage.

The founder of The Gift of Gratitude, Douglas L. McDermott, has always had a deep respect and appreciation for the armed forces. His father served in both WWII and the Korean War; through genealogy research, he has learned of generations of military service in his heritage. Stories of brave soldiers overcoming all obstacles with determination to protect the liberty of their people and country continue to inspire him.
One story is that of Chief Captain Moroni. Chief Captain Moroni was a righteous man of God who lead his soldiers with determination and integrity. He strived to protect his people and their freedom while continuously praising God for the many blessings they were bestowed. Time and time again he rallied his troops to fight against their enemies. He inspired courage, strength, and loyalty to him and to God.

In 1999, it was Chief Captain Moroni that inspired Mr. McDermott to commission the artist, Scott Snow, to illustrate one of the scenes from the story called, “For the Blessings of Liberty”. This became the first painting of many commissioned and imagined by Douglas L. McDermott and it was the beginning of what would later become The Gift of Gratitude Foundation.

Since that first painting, thousands of paintings have been gifted as an expression of gratitude to those who selflessly serve others. These paintings tell a story, give inspiration, and act as a balm of Gilead to soothe and heal the soul.
